3 Easy (& Cheap) Decor ideas!

I am starting off March attempting a no-spend month!

A whole month of no spending is a pretty big deal. Yes it is impossible to literally spend nothing for a whole month. My no spend has some rules to help me achieve my goal:

1. Pay and set aside bills and expenses first.

This one I do every month already. I set aside out of every pay check how much I need for each bill or expense. This goes for: phone bills, insurance, tags, etc.

2. Things that are allowed: anything I need.

This goes for: toiletries, gas, groceries, baby care, oil change, etc.

3. Things that are not allowed: anything I want.

This is the hard part. This goes for things like: stationary, make-up home decor, anything out of the dollar spot, clothes, pens, thrift store finds, books, fast food, impulse buys, etc.

The way I feel about it is, if I want something so bad, and it is still there a month later, it was meant to be. If not, I didn't need it in my life. I am horrible at impulse buys, one of my favorite past times when Townes and I are bored is simply walking around Target. This encourages me to spend money I don't need to when I don't need any of the things I love at first sight. When I gave up my ipsy bag, I realized how much I was spending on products I didn't even use. I am still (a year later) working on using up the samples I got from them.

All this to say, there are ways you can decorate or spice up a space with little to no money!

Project 1: Blooming Wall

Total money spent: ≈ $10.00

This one is so so simple. Surely by now you have seen those cute wall foam flowers you can buy for your wall. People use them for cute backdrops for photos, cute art walls, and so much more. My mother-in-law was sweet enough to get me some that she thought would be cute next to some floral art I have. She got 3 that she found at Hobby Lobby, two blue and one white.

I hung them by the sign I have and they looked a little dull, like I needed many more flowers (which I still plan on purchasing more, but for now). I tried to think about it as a doodle in my bullet journal. If I drew three flowers clustered together, what would it need? Leaves and stems around it to frame it!

I looked around my house and found two faux eucalyptus stems I wasn't using at the time. I had previously bought these for $3.00 at Michael's. I stuck them behind the flowers so that they were coming from behind the flowers and accenting them with the subtle green. I loved the way it turned out, and I never thought of using a bouquet filler as wall decor before! Super easy and super cute!

I estimated a total amount on this project because, I got away without spending a dime. If you decide to purchase these however, I rounded the prices up for you!

I have linked below several options you can use to complete this project in your house!

Project 2: Personal Number

Total money spent: ≈ $7.00

My mother-in-law has a 6 in her home on her gallery wall representing her and her husband and their 4 boys. I thought that was such a sweet idea and a way to pull your family into a gallery wall without using a family photo (Nothing wrong with those, but when you have a husband who despises photos those are few and far between for us). She was sweet enough to get me a cute little clearance 3 she saw while buying the flowers at Hobby Lobby. It was 4 dollars and plain white.

This is where the fun part kicks in. She suggested I painted it, because it was dinged in a few spots and a dull white color that didn't stand out from my light-colored walls. I wanted to paint it, but didn't have any paint at my house other than water color, which would just run right off it's smooth surface. Instead of painting it, I tried an experiment to improvise: Washi-tape!

I started to use Crayola markers, but they wiped right off
the smooth wood. I would suggest using a pen or a sharpie
which I had much better results with.

In case you have never tried washi-tape, it is a thinner, less-adhesive tape that is typically used for scrapbooking or journaling. I thought it could work perfectly for my 3. I used some that I got from Target, (each $1.00 - using 3, totaling at $3.00 these usually run between 1 to 3 dollars. ALWAYS check the dollar spot, they almost always have some for $1.) a navy, a striped gold, and a gold glitter. My gallery wall is mostly shades of blue with some gold accents so I picked the colors that I had that best suited my wall.

I placed the washi-tape in imperfect strips all along the 3 using all three types a different amount so it wouldn't look to uniform. I like a very eclectic style, so if you like more uniform and perfect the washi-tape is very easy to do however you like. After I finished with the tape, I didn't like how it looked alone. I grabbed the nearest pen I could find and added some bohemian designs (more about that in a bit) randomly about the 3.

I scribbled some of the pen on the bottom and didn't like how it looked. The best part about the washi-tape is I just stuck some on and covered it up! A super simple and easy way to cover mistakes also!

Voila! Your personal number (or what have you) is finished. That's it! It is so disgustingly simple and made a cute accent for my wall. I ended up not spending anything with this one but I added up how much you would spend if you bought it all at once for your convenience!

Project 3: Boho Wall Decor

This last one was the last gift my mother-in-law got on her Hobby Lobby run. (LOL this blog post was sponsored by Kelly! *Jk, this is not a sponsored blog post.) But she bought me a gold wall hanging decor. I had a macrame wall tapestry hanging on the wall beside another neutral piece of art and I decided to swap them and hang the macrame above our bed since we don't have a head board.

The whole point of this project was taking something I had and adding something I liked, so you could easily do this with any plain decor pieces you have around your house. You could use one that needs a refresh or update, or even one that you just don't know what to do with because it doesn't fit anywhere.

After I saw how it looked on the wall, I decided it needed something; enter acrylic paint! This one only requires you getting a plain piece of decor that you like and painting it! Like I said, I like more of an eclectic, boho look, and this piece was too modern on its own. I found some inspiration boho patterns on pinterest that I liked and sketched some ideas on a sketch pad before putting my ideas to the piece.

I painted half of the parts navy and left the other half gold. Then I mixed several different patterns and styles on various parts to make it look very mismatched and bohemian. I left some pieces plain navy and some plain gold to break up the noise a little bit. I used cheap brushes and made it messy, I liked the imperfect look! If a part looked too big or too messy, I cleaned it up with a smaller brush.

I really like how this little personality piece added something to my wall. A very simple way to up-cycle something that may not be your style. I didn't include a total amount spent on this one because ideally you would only have to buy paint or maybe find a cheap piece to paint. This would even e beautiful on some empty small frames. Or even painted over a simple mirror. Acrylic paint only runs between less than a dollar to 4 dollars depending! I used pretty cheap paint and it works just as fine for this sort of project. I added links to a few examples of various price ranges.
